This is a two-part session. In the first part, the USCIS officer asks the candidate about their motivations for citizenship, their job, and personal life, among other things. The goal is to get a sense of who the candidate is and determine if they match who they are on paper.
Matching a candidate’s real life to what they put on their résumé is incredibly important and can determine if they proceed to the next phase. This is because, before the interview, the USCIS would have conducted a thorough background check on the applicant. If there are discrepancies in their answers or something that gives the evaluating officer some pause, it can potentially be a reason for denial.
In addition to the interview, the candidate would be required to read and write during the English test. They will also participate in an oral test where the candidate has to demonstrate their ability to communicate properly in the English language. This typically involves reading out a written sentence. Please note that, sometimes, the oral interview process may also be part of the oral aspect of the English test. Eligible applicants can qualify for an exemption from the English test requirement.
After the English test, applicants will also undergo a civics test, which is based on the American government and history. The examiner will only ask ten questions out of the 100 possible questions that make up the civics test. Candidates are expected to answer at least six of them correctly to pass.
If the evaluating USCIS officer is satisfied with the applicant’s responses, they may approve their citizenship application immediately. In some instances, they may ask the applicant to take the Oath of Allegiance later on the same day. If that does not happen, the USCIS will send an official Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony (Form N-445) containing a swearing-in date and the event’s location – usually the same field office where the candidate had the interview.
