Do I Need Form I-693 to Immigrate to the United States?

Do I Need Form I-693 to Immigrate to the United States?

Understanding what forms you need to complete before immigrating to the U.S. is confusing to most of our clients. Do you need to prepare form I-693 in addition to other application paperwork for approval by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)? The short answer is yes. Form I-693 is mandatory.

At New Frontier Immigration Law, we understand how complex the legal process is and we are here for you. Find out what form I-693 is, who must complete it, and when you must submit it in order to enter the country lawfully.

What Is the Purpose of Immigration Form I-693?

Form I-693, also referred to as the Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, is a mandatory medical exam form. The purpose of this USCIS document is to prove that applicants for adjustment of status, or Green Card, are not inadmissible due to health-related reasons. These medical conditions include infectious diseases, like Tuberculosis (TB), or lack of required vaccinations like Measles and Hepatitis B. However, the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer required.

Is Form I-693 Required to Immigrate to the U.S.?

Yes. I-693 is now required for most individuals adjusting their status to lawful permanent resident within the U.S. However, refugees and asylum-seekers may have different requirements, but usually do need to submit a proof of vaccination record.

The I-693 form must be completed by a USCIS-authorized civil surgeon to confirm you have the required vaccinations and to check for signs of communicable diseases. The doctor will provide you with a sealed envelope containing the results of their examination. You must not open it or your application would very likely be rejected.

What Are the Steps To Submit Your Immigration Medical Exam?

Lawful permanent resident applicants, including family-based, employment-based, and Diversity Visa winners, must provide the USCIS with the sealed envelope containing form I-693. You would then submit the form along with Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. Form I-693 is valid only for the specific pending application for which it was completed, replacing the previous indefinite validity policy. Although properly completed forms signed on or after Nov. 1, 2023, are valid indefinitely.

Hillary Walsh is one of America’s foremost immigration attorneys — a nationally recognized advocate whose career has been built case by case, client by client, in the most challenging corners of immigration law.

For over a decade, Hillary has represented immigrants, asylum seekers, trafficking survivors, and families facing deportation in proceedings before the Ninth, Sixth, and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeals, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and immigration courts across the country. Her legal expertise spans removal defense, asylum, VAWA, T Visa, U Visa, green cards, and naturalization — the full breadth of immigration law, with particular depth in protection-based relief for vulnerable populations.

Her work has reached the highest levels of American jurisprudence. Hillary was invited to author an amicus curiae brief for a U.S. Supreme Court case — a distinction extended to attorneys whose command of immigration law is recognized at the national level.
